My embrace and thorough engagement in the photography of social media on Facebook and on Instagram figures prominently in many aspects of my visual life in terms of seeing, observing and documenting my observations.
As in my work in other mediums, my photography (small p) can also be grouped thematically – my late Pug posed on idle construction equipment, the coast as a surfer in the pre-dawn hours, the changing light on the fields behind my house on morning walks and a series of images taken at the local flea market where, with the exception of a brief period after my mother died when I had to take stock of the phrase, “property rich, cash poor”, I have been a regular attendee. I am always on the look out for the interesting accidental narratives discovered in the unlikely juxtaposition of objects. I am amazed how often I see things now through the potential lens of an iPhone camera. When I leave it behind I settle myself with the idea that herein lies the opportunity to be a better observer oddly honed by the lens of the absent camera phone.
